Our Bicentennial Year – 2018
First Baptist Church’s official bicentennial was January 24, 2018. Our celebration of the first 200 years of ministry as a congregation began on Sunday, January 21, 2018. This year-long celebration will included activities, events and mission experiences that reflected on our first 200 years and look forward to how God will use this group of believers in the future to “declare His glory among the nations”.
Reflecting on our Bicentennial Year: A Message from the Pastor
2018 was an exciting year of celebration at First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa, especially the celebration surrounding our Bicentennial. We have much to celebrate and much for which to be thankful regarding the activities and achievements of the year.
Of course, we began the year with three incredible worship gatherings in January as we commemorated our church’s institution on January 24, 1818. Many people joined us for those gatherings including former church members; former staff members; current Alabama Baptist State Convention representatives; current city, county, and state dignitaries; and other special guests from around the country via personal video and written greetings.
We provided a Bicentennial Store in which members and guests were able to purchase a variety of memorabilia regarding our celebration. We produced a beautiful hard-bound pictorial directory of the 2018 congregation. An impressive, informative and permanent Heritage Hall was constructed on the second floor of our Main Building for preserving and viewing important tangible reminders of our church’s history, such as a 200-year church and community time line, the historic pulpit that was used in our church for 140 years (1878-2018), photos and documents, and much more.
These are just a few of the things we did in 2018 to celebrate our Bicentennial. But perhaps one of the most meaningful was the Bicentennial Mission Offering. We had three goals: a Challenge Goal ($200,000), Victory Goal ($215,000), and Hallelujah Goal ($230,000).
The Bicentennial Mission Offering was designated to support five specific ministries – the International Mission Board (Lottie Moon Offering), the North American Mission Board (Annie Armstrong Offering), the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (Myers-Mallory Offering), the Tuscaloosa County Baptist Association (Hatchel Offering), and the translation of the Bible into the language of one of the 200 existing people groups in the Middle East that does not have a copy of the Bible in their native language. Through a partnership with Wycliffe Bible Translators we financed that translation.
Through the sacrificial and faithful giving of our church, we exceeded all three goals by giving a total of $267,767 to the Bicentennial Mission Offering. In doing so, we gave the largest gift to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering in the history of our church – $217,767. To God be all the glory!
I want to thank our church family for your participation and support in the celebration of our Bicentennial. The list of current churches of any denomination, much less just Southern Baptist churches, in Alabama that have existed for 200 years or longer is a very short list. We have been blessed by God and benefactors of a long and historic Christian heritage passed down through some of God’s most faithful people. As we bring closure to our Bicentennial Celebration, may it always be said of us here at First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa – as long as Jesus tarries – that we too were faithful!
